As teachers we all live for those "teachable" moments when students are finally making the connection or are so excited and engaged in a lesson that they just can't get enough. Moments like these are all to infrequent. As professionals, we are pulled in many different directions, are having to do more with fewer resources and increased class sizes. Our success is directly linked to the success of our students on standardized tests and classroom performance. What we truly want to do is teach. We want to invest time in the development of project-based lessons that will allow students to explore those aspects of the project they find the most fascinating, engaging and beneficial. We want our students to explore, discover and create; but we also want them to score well on their standardized tests. Finding the right balance can be difficult.
