Specifically, I want my students to be able to self-report that they understand
what their digital reputation is and how social networking can impact their lives;
experience through others how digital reputations can be positive or negative;
be able to reflect on their learning about digital reputations and be able to
use this knowledge to educate others about digital reputations and the permanence
of their digital actions.
My students are no different from other students in that they rarely understand
that their actions have consequences. Having taught this subject matter before,
I have personally heard students say: “Things like this are just made up to
scare us.” “This kind of thing will never happen to me.” “Sure I post things
that I shouldn’t, but no one will ever find out.” Comments like these as well as having worked on a few sexting and
cyberbullying cases (both in school and with the police department) have provided me with enough proof that students
truly do not understand there are consequences for their actions. Like most students in middle school, they still
believe they are bullet proof.
